Where is ALC located?
ALC will be at the former Toler Heights Elementary School campus at 9736 Lawlor Street, Oakland 94605. This is near the Oakland Zoo and easy to reach by AC Transit. Click here for more information and directions.
What is an "alternative" school?
ALC is an alternative middle school of the Oakland Unified District. We are not a charter school. Being "alternative" means that we meet the same state and district standards, but that we do it in a unique and exciting way. For ALC, being "alternative" also means that students and families have a choice to go to ALC and that they agree to 100% participation in every aspect of our school.
What kind of student are you looking for?
We are looking for students who have not enjoyed success in their recent school experience. Many of our students have poor grades or attendance, and many have been suspended.
However, the students who enroll in the ALC all have one thing in common: They all want to make a change and are ready to take advantage of the small classes and caring adults so that they are well-prepared for high school and beyond (college or the workplace).
What if I don’t like the outdoors?
No problem. We are looking for students who are ready for something new and different, something that is not just more of the same old thing. We are going to ask all students to push themselves outside of their comfort zones—in academic areas, social networks and the physical environment. We expect all students to support each other in overcoming challenges.
Do I have to go to ALC?
No. ALC is completely voluntary. Students and their parents or guardians choose to enroll. Once enrolled, however, we expect a full commitment.
Can I just do part of the ALC program?
No. ALC is not a pick-and-choose program. We believe that at ALC all students can make a turn-around, but only with full participation in the academic, outdoor, enrichment, and counseling support components of ALC.
I have trouble getting up in the morning. What happens if I am late to school?
We expect all students to arrive at school on time. We will work with you and your parent or guardian to come up with an individualized plan to help you make it to all of your classes on time.
I hate reading. (Is this school going to make me read a lot of books?)
The ALC English/Language Arts curriculum is individualized. The reading will be high interest and at each student’s level, plus we will use computers and small group instruction to bring your reading level to a place where you can enjoy reading.
I can’t stand math either.
Like our English program, our math curriculum is designed to help each student individually. Extra time will be spent on English or math so that you will be prepared for high school and ready to pass the California High School Exit Exam when you leave ALC.
Will there be homework?
Many ALC students have had problems with homework in the past. We will assist students in developing plans and strategies for getting homework done.
How long would I stay at ALC?
We expect a one year commitment but many ALC students will choose to remain in the program for two or more years.
Where would I go after ALC?
It is our primary goal to prepare all ALC students for success in high school and beyond. Students who are successful at ALC will receive personal support to transition to their neighborhood high school or another OUSD high school of choice.
I don’t like to talk about my problems. Do I have to work with a counselor?
At ALC we believe that personal growth, as well as academic growth, is necessary for success. Therefore, our counselors partner with our teachers to work in classes, in small groups, and individually with students.
Are there computers at ALC?
While the most important thing about ALC is personal support, we also use technology to engage students in learning. Students will use computers in most of their classes. We also will be working with OTX West to help all students to get free computers for their homes!
