The Alternative Learning Community is a counseling-enriched community day school serving 90 students in grades 6, 7, and 8. ALC provides a voluntary, differentiated, academic program in a highly-structured, nurturing environment where students receive individualized instruction and support. Our primary goal is to equip students with the necessary skills (academic, study, organizational, social, emotional, goal setting and self-monitoring) to successfully matriculate back into a comprehensive middle or high school. Our outdoor/environmental education theme is an important component of ALC and a strand that runs through all subject areas and enrichment activities.
Alternative Learning Community staff...
• collaborate with other teachers, mental health counselors, enrichment instructors, administrators, and other staff in planning, team teaching, excursions, and professional development
• commit to serving students who have struggled in comprehensive schools
• guide both the academic and the personal enrichment of each student
• embrace our outdoor/environmental education theme
• demonstrate strong classroom management skills and participate in a school-wide behavior management plan
• support students who are below basic in English and math to excel in these areas
• partner with and engage families and community
• acknowledge the additional challenges and rewards of being a teacher of a new school
